Optimists' Photography Workshop

for kids of all ages

Sunday, September 8 (or 15th?), 2024

1pm - 5pm

Suggested Donation: $20

This is a fundraiser for The Optimists Club.

Participants will receive photography and cinematography supervision by experienced adults at the exceptionally unique outdoor wonderland of Le Clair Cottage, on Manning Road.

Photos and videos will be judged on creativity, quality, and how well they represent The Optimists' Creed.

All registered youths will receive a basic photography fundamentals class outline and a participation certificate.

Each participant may enter up to three photographs or videos for The Optimists Club to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and prizes (one prize maximum per participant).

Project Outline

John and Jason are pleased to present our project outline to teach kids the fundamentals of photographic (and video) composition. This is the beginning of a casual discussion on how we might improve this event's planning and execution.

Goals

We're looking for assistance, collaborators, and donations in exchange for cross-promotion and public awareness. At this point, far in advance of the September event, we're not even certain of everything that we can offer, much less what we need. In short, we're still brainstorming ideas of what we can provide to the kids for a memorable, fun, and teachable creative photography experience.

Student may bring their own cameras and phones as our main priority is a focus on the fundamentals of image composition, rather than the diverse technicalities of various recording devices, which of course we'll try to help with. Importantly, kids would learn how to use their own gear, rather than technology they may never see again.

Included in this outline

Attached is a work-in-progress designed flyer yet to be finalized.

  1. The curriculum and 5 or 6 page printout could be shared with you when a first draft is completed.
  2. The curriculum is attached. Feel free to share suggestions to improve it.

Fundraising ?

With the Optimists fundraising goal of $500 and a suggested donation of $20, we'd need to enroll 25 students. Those numbers are all flexible. If you think these numbers are too steep, unreasonable, etc. we'd like to hear about it and why.

We'd love to hear ideas on how and where to enroll interested participants, both students and teachers.

Buses ?

We don't yet know if this is practical or not, but perhaps we might meet at the Optimists Park (1075 Ypres Ave) to have a bus shuttle the kids out to LeClair Cottage at 1pm to return at 5pm. We're calling around to find out more.

Expenses ?

There's not much, but it's worth listing, nothing set in stone:

  • bus rental (Optimists Park round trip, 1pm to 5pm)
  • photo printing
  • photo framing
  • water? + cooler? + ice?
  • promotional flyer-posters for businesses' front windows
  • quarter-page flyers (quartered 8.5'x11' sheet of paper, to self-print and cut)

Potential Prizes ?

  • camera(s)
  • good printouts (VistaPrint?)
  • matting & framing (with hanging hooks & wire)
  • photo frames (Walmart, Dollar Store, Value Village, etc.?)

Potential Teachers:

  • John Dippoliti 519-982-5500, PlugNPlay Productions
  • Jason Carswell 519-903-0560, Janglers Animation
  • Vincent ?
  • Windsor Media Centre ?

Noteworthy

Don't share that outline with anyone via email, text, etc. You may show it to folks on your device in your control for their direct feedback in person - just don't let an incomplete draft out into the wild.

I'm scraping a bunch of pages today to read through for reference to compile a class lesson.

Feel free to inquire about a school bus:

Optimist Community Centre

1075 Ypres Ave, Windsor, ON N8W 1S1

LeClair Cottage

2465 County Rd 19, Tecumseh, ON N8N 2L9

At best we can have a ride donated, or we might be able to rent one, and at worst we won't but will know how much it is for 5 hours on a Sunday.

+ no bus (liability)

+ rain? = week later and/or indoor shoot - verify with Elton's Uncle
