Summary

Listening to Whitney Webb this afternoon (2023-05-14), for a couple hours I tested out my new pens from Japan with this white ink sketch on black acrylic paint tweaked with black Sharpies on a little 5"x7" canvas board. I learned the pros and cons of these mediums interacting with each other, and confirmed again that a little planning and measuring will make for a finer product in the future. This medium-grade test sketch will likely be a gift - not for sale. For serious works I won't just riff without planning, measure for symmetry and proportion where necessary, and for smaller works be aware of the limitations of the pens, consistency, and canvas. Larger canvases would surely be more forgiving. Coloured pens might be interesting too. The acrylic paint and white ink are matte but the Sharpie specular is an issue that might be solved with a much-needed overcoat.

A couple ideas that occurred to me was that I could 1) do one of these to feature in each show (forthcoming series, eventually), 2) take intermittent progress photos to compile into an animation of the illustration taking shape, and 3) auction off the final illustration. Also, 4) T-shirts could be made featuring illustrations (or just select the best ones) and/or 5) touch-up and vectorize them into better versions for mass production.

This is the second public display of this digital file (IMG_20230514_154925.jpg). Shared and discussed:
