Latin Mass is a project to record video with audio of the only Latin mass in the Windsor region at the Holy Name of Mary Church, then edit and present it to the world.

Pre-production

Team

Gary Freeze began this Latin Mass video project by reaching out to Jason Carswell. They discussed it, toured the church in October or November, Gary toured Europe, and on 2024-12-05 Gary again met with Jason who immediately started this wiki-page.

There are one or few others at Gary's church who may get involved along the way. Everyone is welcome to join Projex to co-edit wiki-pages.

There may be one or two on the audio-visual team in addition to Jason, depending.

Practical goals

Rather than a single-camera production, because it's an event, ideally we'd set up as many camera angles as possible - needing multiple cameras and microphones to simultaneously record as much as possible to get the maximum amount of coverage to work with (and in case a device or more fails for whatever reason(s)).

Equipment rentals

Windsor Media Centre

Hoping to rent proper gear (cameras, mics, etc.) from Amanda / Windsor Media Centre.

Pete Malone

GoPro 8 Black.
Sony UWP-D Lavalier & Plug-On Wireless Mic Package.
Tascam DR 40 digital recorder.

I reached out to Pete Malone for his great cameras and gear used on his FreedomForJournalists.com productions. Under his supervision, he's keen to rent us his gear for the project.

This includes Pete's time for 1) a location scout, 2) some time for gear testing, 3) a half-day of setup + main-shoot + teardown, and possibly 4) another part-day of internal and external pickup shots. Pete should be respectful and avoid cursing at the church. We can have drinks when all is wrapped.

Malone's gear includes two high-end video cameras (Sony PXW-Z200 4K HDR 1in CMOS Sensor XDCAM Camcorder) with two good tripods, each camera with 2 audio channels in (4 total) - and he has a digital audio recorder (Tascam DR 40). Pete has two wireless lav mics (Sony UWP-D Lavalier & Plug-On Wireless Mic Package), a shotgun mic, and all required mic extensions and cables (to patch into the church mixer). We may also use Pete's two GoPro 8 Black video cameras, and lights if needed. Pete is responsible for providing everything in working order (all cables, batteries charged, cameras, chargers, lenses, lights, mics, tripods, etc.), once delivered he will stand by as Jason will be responsible for operating and securing the recordings on Jason's SD cards.

$500 cash for Pete's time and gear. Jason thinks half up front, half on completion of Pete's obligations (above) is fair.

Equipment purchases

There's no shortage of GoPros available on Facebook Marketplace ranging from $20 to $500+ - each. GoPro is just one of many brand names (overrated?) and there are many other 4K cameras available that aren't as compact or rugged that might be better. It's going to take some time to research what is what or even worth it. A mediocre 4K video could be cropped down to a decent 1K video, depending - it's nice to have options.

On Facebook Marketplace, Zack Berjawi, Windsor Media Centre member, is selling two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras (with cages - but without lenses) for $1500 each going for $2330 on Amazon.ca

On Facebook Marketplace, Ange Rue Da of Tecumseh, for $500 is selling a Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD with lens and other things. The body only (without lens) on Amazon is $567. It's only 1080p, but might do well with a good lens before it's completely obsolete. Importantly, it's similar to the 4K camera I was looking at on Amazon for ~$2000: Canon DSLR Camera [EOS 90D] with 18-135 is USM Lens, compatible with Canon EF Lenses (including Macro and Fisheye). At the very least I'd get more used to using that style of gear - same as the next...

On Facebook Marketplace, Lisa Spooner in Harrow, for $650 is selling a "EOS Rebel T6 EOS 1300D Canon Camera plus accessories" plus a big lens - that is on Amazon for $862 with a few more accessories, without the big lens.

Of course there are plenty of other options, on Facebook and beyond.

Equipment in hand

More soon.

Jason has a capable mobile phone to record with, wired lavaliere microphones, other mics of unassessed quality, lots of non-professional lights, coloured gels, some cheap tripods, cables, extension cords, adapters, etc.

Other crew

Maybe we should find a good sound guy (I could make a flyer) so that we'd be certain to get a good recording. Ideally I should really learn what I actually need to understand and be proficient with.
