Newton's flaming laser sword
A principle addressing differing views of scientists and philosophers on epistemology and knowledge:
- In its weakest form it says that we should not dispute propositions unless they can be shown by precise logic and/or mathematics to have observable consequences. In its strongest form it demands a list of observable consequences and a formal demonstration that they are indeed consequences of the proposition claimed.

Nontroversy
A contraction or portmanteau of non + controversy.
An attempt, often politically or commercially motivated, to allege or cause controversy over something that is not contentious, scandalous, or even true.
(Slang) A controversy that does not exist until created or amplified for political gain.
A fictional or exaggerated controversy for self-serving purposes, commonly generated by politicians and corporate media to attract an audience and/or distract the public.
Generally, a nontroversy will present to one side of a political spectrum a narrative to make the other side look foolish, amplify it, and the story's backlash will far outweigh the impact of the actual story.
Compared to non-issue:
- A nontroversy specifically implies that there is a visible, loud, but hollow public debate happening.
- A non-issue is simply unimportant; a nontroversy is a non-issue that has been loudly (and falsely) branded as a crisis.
A supposed controversy that does not exist or is of little importance.
