A press release is a compelling, objective, yet interesting story that you share with journalists when you have an announcement to make.
It's important to include enough details that the journalist has a complete overview of all the information.
It is NOT an advertisement.

- Change to leadership
- Expanding into a new market
- Industry research or report
- New product launch
- The news has a big impact on your industry
- or society
Press Release Ground Rules
A press release is not an article. It is a document that enables a reporter to write an article.
- Makes a clear announcement
- Delivers and easy-to-understand message in "lede" paragraph
- Third person, objective writing
- No overt selling or hyperbole
- Answers the question "Why should I care about this?"
The Basics
- Make it worthwhile
- Know your audience(s)
- Make it easy for outlets
- Use the Inverted Pyramid (Lead + Body + Tail)
The Lead
Who + What + Where + When + How
1-2 paragraphs to convince the audience to read the rest of the article.
May include a compelling narrative, provocative quote or question, or noteworthy statistic to "hook" the reader.
The Body
Story + Arguments + Issues
Evidence - Background - Details - Logic
Quotes, photos, video, audio, etc. to support, dispute, and expand the topic.
