Does a bear read in the woods?

A press release is a compelling, objective, yet interesting story that you share with journalists when you have an announcement to make.

It's important to include enough details that the journalist has a complete overview of all the information.

It is NOT an advertisement.

Newsworthy

Your press release must be worth your time, and the time of your readers.

  • A funding announcement
  • An upcoming event
  • Change to leadership
  • Expanding into a new market
  • Industry research or report
  • New product launch
  • The news has a big impact on your industry
  • or society

Press Release Ground Rules

A press release is not an article. It is a document that enables a reporter to write an article.

  • Makes a clear announcement
  • Delivers and easy-to-understand message in "lede" paragraph
  • Third person, objective writing
  • No overt selling or hyperbole
  • Answers the question "Why should I care about this?"

The Basics

  • Make it worthwhile
  • Know your audience(s)
  • Make it easy for outlets
  • Use the Inverted Pyramid (Lead + Body + Tail)

The Lead

Who + What + Where + When + How

1-2 paragraphs to convince the audience to read the rest of the article.

May include a compelling narrative, provocative quote or question, or noteworthy statistic to "hook" the reader.

The Body

Story + Arguments + Issues

Evidence - Background - Details - Logic

Quotes, photos, video, audio, etc. to support, dispute, and expand the topic.

The Tail

Interesting extras, wrap-around, & analysis.
