Bittersweet Seeds: Gallery: Characters
A brief character concept history
These describe only the development of the external appearance of the characters. For more on the characters and their backstories, see Bittersweet Seeds: Characters.
In my mind there are many layered rationales for these choices. Later on I can expand upon what little I notate here, if requested.
Almost from the beginning I gave Ernest half-Palestinian and half-Syrian ancestry. This was not just because I hope to bring attention to these poor peoples under unjust occupation and violence, but because I had a girlfriend in 2003-2004 of the same exact heritage, though back then Syria was not suffering as now. Only later did I find several layers of deeper meanings aligning to cement my decision. Template:Highlight round For this story, ultimately Ernest Martyn Achbar will become a martyr of sorts, and I found it interesting that another peace-loving anti-establishment Palestinian hippie was famously martyred (Jesus). While working in NYC with some co-animators from Paris, they explained how Arab culture in France is akin to Black/Urban culture in America and the taboo "bad boys" are loved by the ladies. Celine found that Ernest was not an Arab hipster bad boy soon after meeting him, yet fell for him anyway. There's a whole back story about how they met in France, moved to Toronto, and later brought her parents over. His parents and family have a whole backstory too, but in brief, his side of the family is all dead.
Celine's father, Pépère, is French-German and her mother, Mémère, is French-Jewish. All are atheists, but by default Mémère, Celine, and Celeste are all technically Jewish.
While I've intentionally chosen these heritages for these characters, I want to avoid it being at all apparent until it actually comes up in conversation. This means I'm intentionally designing them to be ambiguous, attractive, and refined - not only to avoid or counter stereotypes but also to be appealing for marketing purposes. First, draw in the audience, then twist it and/or challenge them and their misperceptions.
Until I spend some time sketching and refining these characters, I will rely on two modes of temporary representation.
- Use some of my old sketches.
- Use celebrity stand-ins.
I have some old sketches that are not a too bad start for Ernest and Celine, but not much beyond a bunch of sketches on Post-Its and in a sketchbook. Meanwhile I may lean on celebrities with facial traits I seek and vast imagery repertoires featuring enough diverse facial expressions, camera angles, and lighting scenarios that I may borrow from as reference.

Character design development history
A fraction of my work is in this gallery: User:JasonCarswell/gallery, and of that I pulled out some sketches of classy women and men that have a variety of appealing characteristics, including facial features, expressions, attitudes, hair styles, fashion sense, etc. Among those I feel like the "Wind Man - Blue" and "French Female + Lead" might be the best ones to build upon.
The wind man has fine features with fair hair, but if you give him a tan and dark hair he could easily be Middle Eastern as much as anything. I don't recall when I sketched him, but I'm quite certain I sketched the "French Female" in the late 1990's, scanned it and vectorized it around 2001, about the time I started a short story that would become this epic project, though at that time I didn't even have an inkling of Ernest nor Celine.
In 2006 I was developing a brand with some flash animations for an energy drink, SmartPower. We came up with short stories with a hero and heroine who use SmartPower, and some flunkies who do not. In coming up with the character design aesthetic I showed them my gallery, much like that above, and they latched onto the "French Female". Thereafter, I designed a male counter-part in the same style and a variety of pieces, sets, and characters to be animated, etc. Unfortunately that project did not reach completion - and yes, I know there are still a lot of things to tweak about these still images, including ironing out some awkward proportions and gestural stiffness where layer elements overlap (it was all meant to be animated so the simple snowboard image actually has 15 separate parts). Fortunately, with a minor makeover and some tweaks I'm quite sure I can make them into the definitive Ernest and Celine of my imagination with a clear style to be applied to the other characters and maybe to this storyboard/graphic novel project at large.
More on this, with images, soon enough...
