MetaVote™

MetaVote™ is a voting and tagging system for deeper analytics, algorithms, and better search results. A 5x5 grid with "Meh-Neutral" in the center and in the corners opinion extremes: Wise, Daft, Joy, and Disgust. With five degrees of separation from any corner to any corner, midway between Wise and Funny is Witty, among the 25 options. Better than binary up/down or one-dimensional 10 stars, this 5x5 grid measures 5 qualitative values. Similarly metatags and sub-metatags could be organized for quick tagging of posts and comments - or be utilized as admin tools or other things.

MetaVote™ could look something like this, at right, but MUCH better - plus I added another row just to see with save/record, up, null, down, flag/tag/note. This page features wiki tables just to crudely illustrate the concept. Good graphic design would make it all much more aesthetically pleasing.

"MetaVote™" is not trademarked, and is just a witty made-up name that fits for now - a working title.

GUI grid size

To reduce the graphic user interface size of the 5x5 grid, remove all the top, bottom, and side spacing around the faces.

For maximum grid reduction, keep the middle and extreme corner faces, but replace all remaining faces with smaller circles (without facial features).

Even smaller, simply show one face, likely larger, starting with "Meh" or a blank circle - then hover-over expando-displays the 5x5 grid of options to click on. The "Meh" face will be replaced with the new selection. The displayed selection may be changed by hover-over revealing the 5x5 grid of options to change.

The title should be displayed beneath the grid/face selection. (ie. "Witty")

MetaVote™ feature ideas

  • Entire field of options is greyed out and smaller until you hover over it - then it grows with options.
    • On phone/tablet devices a click-drag may suffice.
  • Select the "Meh-Neutral" if you don't care, don't have an opinion, don't wish to weigh in, wish to pass it by, or simply mark it as "seen" so you don't have to see it again.
  • Add colour to the 25 squares for visual ergonomics. The colour temperature of the vote indicates the intensity and direction.
  • Click and hold to get a second level of 25 more options - or to display larger with text descriptions of the options.
  • Click and drag to rotate the "cube" for other 25-face options x6 fields/sides.
  • Hover over outside 16 squares for another 25-face field to slide out from behind.
  • Animated icons.
  • When a selection is made, the icon and description fill the space, plus an edit icon indicates a change can be made.

Colours and numbers may make it easy to remember, though we might want to tone the vibrant colours way back in CSS themes - or just develop good graphic design elements that work. Perhaps the 25 example options (we could curate better defaults) could feature the alphabet instead (Q+X share one) and clicking on a letter opens more options, all starting with that letter.

History

MetaVote™ was conceptualized by Jason Carswell as an intellectual exercise to improve meta-data collection, content meta-data analysis, qualitative results, and GUI ergonomics to improve the user experience with the Reddit-like SaidIt.net up/down voting system.[ Citation needed ] Circa ~2019-2022.
