Among my favourite Irish movies that every truth-seeker should see.
These are big corporate movies so they still have some conformities, limits, and agendas, as do documentaries, but for the most part these movies buck the trend and forgo official narrative propaganda for some hard hitting realities questioning authority (even if fictional) with White-on-White atrocities. These really are not good date movies nor uplifting for the holidays.
Black '47 (2018)
(DO NOT be deceived by the movie poster. Terrible marketing and not very representative.)
If you like Se7en, Natural Born Killers, Last Of The Mohicans, The Duelists, heartbreaking tragedy and revenge fantasies against the elite, then Black '47 may be your movie. It's right up there with the two others below.
Incredible filmmaking with a stark visual poetry, reasonably unpredictable tension, gripping action bursts, a satisfying cliffhanger, and there's only one thing in this movie that bugs me...
The so-called great Irish potato famine was nothing of the sort. It was a British inflicted Irish Holocaust. There were more British soldiers occupying the little Irish island than occupying the entire Indian subcontinent. Their food and land and lives were stolen and shipped to England for profit on an incomprehensible scale. That said, despite perpetuating some of that potato blame myth, they also managed to portray an amazing amount of the real class struggle. (The IMDb trivia and goofs sections are mostly great too.) There are other wonderful historical nuggets in there too that I won't spoil for you.

" Given the singular importance of the Great Famine in Irish history, and that it has never been seen on our cinema screens before, our cast and crew felt a huge responsibility to make a film that was not only historically accurate and emotionally true... "

" Set in Ireland during the Great Famine, the drama follows an Irish Ranger who has been fighting for the British Army abroad, as he abandons his post to reunite with his family. Despite experiencing the horrors of war, he is shocked by the famine's destruction of his homeland and the brutalization of his people and his family. " ~ BritishFilms1
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
This is an epic cinematic feast in a tale from the underdog's perspective. You'll see why they resort to terrorism to fight the worse state inflicted terrorism.

A great 2006 movie with a pretty trailer that screams 1992. Misleading. Shame. Heavy movie.

" In 1920, rural Ireland is the vicious battlefield of republican rebels against the British security forces and Irish Unionist population who oppose them, a recipe for mutual cruelty. Medical graduate Damien O'Donovan always gave priority to his socialist ideals and simply helping people in need. Just when he's leaving Ireland to work in a highly reputed London hospital, witnessing gross abuse of commoners changes his mind. he returns and joins the local IRA brigade, commanded by his brother Teddy, and adopts the merciless logic of civil war, while Teddy mellows by experiencing first-hand endless suffering. When IRA leaders negotiate an autonomous Free State under the British crown, Teddy defends the pragmatic best possible deal at this stage. Damien however joins the large seceding faction which holds nothing less than a socialist republic will do. The result is another civil war, bloodily opposing former Irish comrades in arms, even the brothers. " ~ KGF Vissers
Hidden Agenda (1990)
An older movie, not quite as pretty, but with a hard hitting rebellious spirit, a false flag, corrupt police, and a bent justice system trying to silence authentic journalism. Still stands up.

" When an American human rights lawyer is assassinated in Belfast, it remains for the man's girlfriend, as well as a tough, no nonsense, police detective to find the truth... which they soon discover to be contained in an audio tape which the man had with him, exposing political manipulations at the highest levels of government. But such underlying agendas require careful considerations to avoid worse things than murder. " ~ BOB STEBBINS stebinsbob@aol.com
